Residents of Peotone march against airport

May 13, 2001

Hundreds of residents marched in a parade Saturday in Peotone to protest a proposal to build an airport in the rural area south of Chicago. Proponents such as Gov. Ryan say a new airport in Peotone would ease congestion at O'Hare and Midway airports. Critics say it would bring noise and traffic. The proposal, which has been on the table since at least 1992, has been blocked by Mayor Daley and the major airlines. But political changes in Washington and growing frustration with the nation's air-travel system have given new life to the idea.
