Hi. it is good to see a page where all air traffic controllers can get updated info on what is going on in the industry. In the bahamas I am Vice president of the Air Traffic Controllers Union. We are affiliated with Natca through ifatca The international federation of Air trafic controllers associations as well as through our umbrella union The Trade Union Congress(TUC). We encourage Natca in its fight against Privatization and support them 100%.

lagos, lagos nigeria - Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at 11:31:42 (EDT) After a little over 10 years since I last worked as a center controller, I stumbled upon your live ATC feeds. Not only did it bring back wonderful memories of thinking fast, talking fast, and handling busy traffic situations, but I was able to play the feeds for people who never knew me then say "now this is what I used to do!" Thanks.

Duisburg, D Germany - Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 15:24:04 (EDT) After too many years of getting on and off aircraft to visit family or here and there I discovered ATC's. When I first started to listen to KORD I barely understood a thing anyone was saying. It was all being said so fast. As I learn I appreciate the partnernship between pilot and ATC. Most of all I appreciate the ATC. I do not know how you handle the stress of this job! Keep up the great work. This site is incredible.

Memphis, TN US - Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at 21:10:22 (EST) I came back to this website to see what new things I could find. I thought I put my thoughts down. I was an Air Traffic Controller in the US Army during the Regan Administration. It was a time in which all Air Traffic Controllers decided to go on strick and resulting in a lost of jobs in that feild. Today Air Traffic Control has changed, ever since that dreaful day on september. Air Traffic Control has become a decsion making issue that one person may have to make. I wonder? if it had been me would I have done the same thing? It's different, when it comes to losing lives over the wrong decision, perhaps I too would have been "If I only knew" but the facts are that you can train a monkey to land aircrafts or control traffic, but you can not train a monkey to make decisions, and that is what Air Traffic Control is really all about. Making decision. It's much different to control aircrafts in a simulator then in an actual tower or Radar. So to those who wish to be Air Traffic Controllers, make decisions based on the greatest good for the greater numbers of dynamics and you won't go wrong. I think that all Air Traffic Controllers seem to have a very high tempo for stress, and a strong ability to keep there thoughts clear and on the job. For some ATC is easy, fun and exciting, Perhaps it's all the studying that was put there that makes the job easy. Though I'm too old to get back into the job, one thing is certain, you'll always keep what you had when you where in it and always feel proud to have done it. To all Air Traffic Controllers here in the states and world wide, "Happy 2003". And keep up the execellant work you were well trained to do.

Decided MIA was a better deal for the same bucks and a better tan. Saw the name Bob Hocking on your roster. Really old, old guy from MSP? - Saturday, September 28, 2002 at 00:19:25 (EDT) Just wanted to see if anybody at O'Hare Tower remembers Vinny Vanderline. He was a USAF Controller in the MOB that deployed to O'Hare during the PATCO strike. He was one of the few who were able to get an early out and keep working for the FAA. He was my trainer in 1981. I'd like to know what happened to him.

longmont, co usa - Thursday, September 05, 2002 at 01:56:49 (EDT) Hi! I just stumble across you Guest Book today - I was a little saddened to see some of the comments from some folks regarding the PATCO rehiring issue. After reading Mr. Carr's thoughtful comments from last year about this subject, I felt less saddened.I feel that for some people, this issue will trouble them until the day they die. My advice - put it to rest.....the powers that be will rehire the people they want....those that want to pursue the age discrimination issue - more power to you.....but let's not fight among fellow controllers....life is too short to carry all those grudges and all that hate. As the Bhuddist monk said tho the hot dog vendor - "Make me one with everything!"Pat Vaughan USMC 65-69ZOB 75-81Take Care

Cochin, Kerala India - Friday, August 23, 2002 at 08:29:09 (EDT) To Anti PATCO NATCA Controllers - It is sad indeed when I read the anti PATCO remarks initiated by NATCA members and leaders. However, it is readily apparent that such individuals have very little regard for the labor movement. Whether the 1981 strike was legal or otherwise is not the point. PATCO members through a democratic vote determined that conditions and its relationship with the FAA had deteriorated to a point that there was no other avenue to pursue. If we want to look at a union which completely disregards soladarity within the labor movement one only has to look at many, not all, NATCA shenanagins. When NATCA was unhappy with its affiliate MEBA it abandoned the AFL-CIO to become an independent union. When NATCA, after the fact decided an independent organization was not in its best interest it came back begging to be re-affiliaed with the AFL-CIO. If it weren,t for AFSCME, PATCO's national affiliate, NATCA would still be outside the AFL-CIO. NATCA was re-affiliated with the understanding that within one year of its AFL-CIO re-affiliation it would affiliate with a charted AFL-CIO International organization. NATCA has not lived up to that obligation. While PATCO and all other unions live up to their obligation of required affiliation and pay per-capita NATCA circumvents its obnligation to pay its true share. On another note, no NATCA controller has the right to suggest that 81 PATCO controllers are wimps and that they can't check out. The very reason many of the 81 controllers aren't checking out is that NATCA controllers refuse to give them training. NATCA rational is that 81 controllers will regain seniority and may take their vacation time - get real. Many NATCA folks talk tough about how committed they are to labor and solidarity - yet they are so far removed from reality they wouldn't know solidarity if they tripped over it. If NATCA wants to show solidarity it should affiliate with an international and in its next round of negotiations with the FAA should demand that any 81 PATCO controller who wishes to return to the FAA should be offered immediate reinstatement. The NATCA people who take exception to PATCO 81 are the probably the same people that would sell out their own organization if push ever comes to shove. Believe me I am not anti NATCA, but NATCA should openly and candidly stand up at the plate in solidarity. Jack SeddonExecutive DiretorPATCO
Hello
USA - Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at 19:53:38 (EDT) I'm a ATC fanatic.. I'm too old to become a real atc controller, so i play on VATSIM (virtual air traffic simulation) If no one has heard of it i'll explain it shortly.. Vatsim is a network that has been around for quite some time now, it combines MS flight simulator with a program called Squawk box for flying online, and a program called Pro controller for the atc side of it.... people fly all over the world using it, and controllers man positions around the world to control these aircraft. its as real as you can get. we even have voice communications with pilots. ATC positions start from clerance delivery all the way up to ctr controller and fss.. i have somewhat around 560 hours online as a Virtual controller at KORD. if some of you are interested in this check out www.vatusa.org

toronto, ont canada - Friday, July 26, 2002 at 11:18:24 (EDT) Report: FAA not ready for retiring controllers.CNN WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Nearly half the nation's air traffic controllers will retire by 2010, and the Federal Aviation Administration is not doing enough to replace them, according to a report released Monday by the investigative arm of Congress. According to the General Accounting Office report, the FAA has not developed a comprehensive plan to replace the coming wave of retirees. The GAO found the FAA is hiring controllers only when experienced ones leave and is not taking into account the time it takes to fully train replacements. The report also cited uncertainty about the FAA's new aptitude test to identify good controllers. The FAA will need to hire another 2,000 controllers to handle increasing air traffic over the next decade, the report said. The need for new air traffic controllers will be acute by 2010...The GAO said the FAA needs to time its hiring of new controllers so there is no gap...According to the union representing air traffic controllers, staffing has reached a "desperate stage." "We've always said controllers are like runways -- it takes three to five years to make a good one," said John Carr, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. "We need to hire a bubble of controllers that will move our National Airspace System smoothly through the next decade without the turbulence of short staffing and its numerous associated problems."Any comments on this, do you guys think FAA will hire ATCS from abroad to fullfil this gap. Looking forward for a career in ZAU ARTCC, experienced ATCS.btw, great site.I LOVE CHICAGO, been there for 2 years, and going back ASAP.any comment will be appreciated.cheers!

Kolkata (Calcutta), We india - Sunday, June 02, 2002 at 03:57:35 (EDT) My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

- Friday, December 21, 2001 at 18:49:53 (EST) Great site. ORD brings back memories. About 1960, I was a controller in Toronto Centre and applied with the FAA to work in Chicago Center, becayse I knew it was the busiest (at the time) in the world; and I wanted to go there. I guess I was a little macho. Anyway, I received a polite note that because I wasn't an American, rthey couldn't accept me. Later, as a manager, I spent several days visiting your ARTC and was impressed with the control environment and the Chicago conntrollers. Now, as a retiree, I enjoy searching the Web and reading about current problems and new equipment/procedures.Keeps the gray matter from deteriorating too quickly. I just would like to say that I've worked almost every job as a controller and an operations manager in ATC--and the best job, the most satisying job I ever had--was as a working controller in Toronto Center. Keep 'em flying, guys. And God Bless America.Leo

EFHK, Finland - Friday, July 27, 2001 at 06:40:08 (EDT) Hi had the fortunate opportunity to tour the Tracon with my Father, Lloyd Eastburn. I was very impressed with Tracon. All the people I met in the control room went out of their way to explain their specific areas and increased my knowledge of the actual "guts" of how a control room operates. I owe a a big thanks to my Father for introducing me to all the controllers and sharing his knowledge and many years of experience as a veteran controller, back from the days of PATCO. Thanks to all.
Lori D. Eastburn <mbarnett2@home.com>
Laguna Niguel, CA USA - Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 01:20:53 (EDT) About Time.....Dear PATCO Brothers and Sisters,You don't know me, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is John Carr, and I am the president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. At our Biennial Convention in 1990 and again in 1994, NATCA passed resolutions which became our current Bylaw C-5. This Bylaw states:"The members of NATCA will support actions that would allow former air traffic controllers that were fired because of the strike in 1981 to be rehired as air traffic controllers."As I'm sure you all know, we were in support of the President's actions in 1993 to remove the prohibition on your rehire. Subsequent to that order the FAA began including PATCO controllers in their rehire plans, although the effort was abysmally small and never amounted to much more than ten percent of any group of hires. It is my understanding that somewhere on the order of 800 PATCO controllers have managed to get rehired in the last eight years---roughly a hundred a year.Taken on it's face, many inside and outside my organization could argue that the literal interpretation of that Bylaw---that is, "NATCA will support actions"--- has been met. I disagree. I am keenly aware of your place in history, and I am cognizant of the fact that many of our victories have come while standing on the foundations that you laid. Lucky for me I happen to be president, which puts me in a unique position to interpret Constitutional language.I think we can do more, and I have put my actions where my mouth is.I have met and discussed this issue with Bill Peacock, AT-1. I have met and discussed this issue with Jane Garvey, the FAA Administrator. I have mentioned this issue in passing to the Secretary of Transportation, Norm Mineta, and I have been carefully preparing the message I plan to deliver in public and to the media during observances to mark the 20th anniversary of the strike.Additionally, I have informed the agency that I will not be satisfied unless and until we can increase the numbers dramatically from their current anemic state. Trusting soul that I am I will require any agreements we reach to be reduced to writing, where they will be binding on the parties. The agency, on the other hand, doesn't see things quite this way. They view the PATCO rehire issue as a resource issue, with them (FAA) wasting resources to hire and train you so you can retire. Of course, they can't answer for why they didn't hire you eight years ago, but that is not my fight and wastes effort better spent on a positive outcome.Likewise, the agency can make a very good case that hiring is an inherently management right and that no written agreements will be made with respect to the issue. They will wink and nod and say all the right things, and then go on about the task of doing exactly whatever the hell it was they were going to do anyway. Good point! I suppose that's where some nay Sayers and armchair critics find traction for their arguments, and it's a fair "worst case scenario".So, where does that leave us? Well, I'm a firm believer in the old adage: "If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got." I salute those who have worked diligently for many years on this issue, and I fully expect them to continue their quest. Those best intentions notwithstanding, their efforts to date have been ineffective.I intend to move forward with my agenda, which is to press the agency on all fronts for a written agreement to rehire PATCO controllers. Will I be successful? Only time will tell. Am I sincere? I suppose you will have to be the judge of that.My organization has established a long track record of success with the agency on many heretofore non-negotiable items including leave and pay. I have no reason to believe that a carefully crafted proposal on PATCO rehires, properly leveraged, would stand any less chance of success.I could be wrong, and I well might fail. If I do, it will be while fully engaged on the issue, and while giving it my very best. In the end, that's about all you can ask of anybody.Sincerely, and in Solidarity,John S. Carr, President NATCA (AFL/CIO)

In this world the skies are 'non-space' for controller/pilots this is obviously not the case. I would like to write an academic article on how planes are directed and narrated across the skies. I am particularly interested in long tracks across the oceans. Is there anyway I can get hold of transcripts of pilot/control and pilot/pilot conversations. Aslo where could I find a glossary/dictionary of air traffic control terms.I realise this is an odd request but I would be so grateful for any help.Garry
